Thomas Stearns Eliot (1888-1965), a poet, critic, editor, and playwright, was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He received a B. A. in 1909 and an M. The writer and critic Professor David Daiches was born in Sunderland on 2 September 1912. He was the son of the author Rabbi Dr. Salis Daiches (1880-1945), Edinburgh Hebrew Congregation.
